ENERGY EFFICIENCY EXISTING SHIP INDEX (EEXI)

The Energy Efficiency Existing Ships Index (EEXI) is the IMO’s agreed method of measuring and benchmarking a vessel’s designed energy efficiency. By assessing a vessel’s output of Carbon per ton-mile of cargo carried and implementing requirements on this performance indicator, the IMO hopes to move closer to its intended target of a total carbon reduction in the shipping industry of 40% by 2030, and 50% by 2050.

Given the potential costs to owners and operators, as well as the likely surge in demand for the installation of energy efficiency technologies, calculating the EXXI for each vessel is advisable as soon as possible to allow for planning and budgeting.
